Good mental health promotes education and -at a later stage in life- healthy occupation and participation in the society and public life.
Therefore, since 2012 we offer psychological support services individually or in groups, in a High School in our city.
Regarding the individually provided psychological support service, it is focused on educational matters (stress on exams and grades, failures, aggressive tendencies, indiscipline, reduced interest and absences from school), as well as personal-family issues (smoking and addictive substances, health issues, depression, coping with grief, low self-confidence, divorced parents, etc.).
As far as the services provided in groups are concerned, an experiential workshop is being held on anger management, under the title: \“Transforming your Anger into Personal Power\”. Through the 8 meetings of the workshop, the students have the opportunity to identify, express and manage their feelings: to recognise signs of anger, learn simple techniques of anger management, realise the importance of inner speech, etc.
Simultaneously to the services provided to the students, there was a close cooperation with the school teachers. Presentations on the different was of class and student behaviour management were held, aiming at an effective communication between students and teachers for avoiding conflicts. In some instances, parental counselling was also necessary in terms of how to manage their teenage child.
Several positive and optimistic messages emerge through this initiative. It is with great pleasure that we realise that these initiatives not only benefit at a personal level, but they have a greater impact and they result to an amelioration of the overall school climate. Psychological support in schools responds to the psychosocial needs of students and their families and help the development and adjustment of children and teenagers to the school -and not only- environment. Our aim through this programme is the overall improvement of the quality of life of students and thereby the enhancement of their academic performance and development and their smooth integration within the social context.
